Global File Changer - How can I change all text with one font to a different font in multiple files?

This article walks you through changing the font for all selected text to a new font of your choice in multiple files.

This article uses the built-in Modify text… custom feature of Global File Changer to perform this task.

In this process, you’re going to be creating three files, which will work together to produce the desired result.
TXT – A text parameter file that defines the text change to be performed.
SEL – A file that identifies which elements to apply changes to.
KEY – A file to identify the TXT file, SEL file and any MicroStation key-ins to execute.

  1. Load Global File Changer.

  1. Go to Settings | Restore Factory Defaults…, and press <Yes> when prompted.
This is a precaution to ensure there are no other features or settings active that might impact your result.
  2. Next to the Design Files: field, press the <Select...> button.
  3. Either drag and drop your files into the Choose Files to Process dialog box, or navigate to and select your files for processing. Press <OK> when finished.

  1. Go to Custom | Modify text…

In the Modify Text dialog box, select the replacement font you want the text to use.

  1. In the Font field, enter the font you want your text to use.
  2. Choose Selection | Set text selection criteria…
  3. Press <Clear All Types>.

In the Element Selection dialog box, select the existing font or fonts you want to replace for the selected element types.

  1. Under the Element types section, press the white arrow to the right of Text to load the Text Attributes dialog box.
  2. Press the white arrow to the right of Font, choose a single font or multiple fonts and press <OK>.

  1. Press <Add> and then <OK>.

Optional: Choose Tag and/or Text Node and walk through steps 9-11 to change fonts in those elements as well.

  1. In the Selection Set Name field enter a name for your set.

  1. Press in sequence the buttons labeled <Add> to make this an active set, then press <Test> to highlight elements.
Assuming you are in one of the DGN files that requires font changing, you’ll see the text type elements you’ve defined here become highlighted.
  2. Go to File | Save, then name your SEL file, navigate to a convenient location to save it and press <Save>.
  3. Press <OK>, and then press <OK> again when prompted with the Select Set Name dialog box.
  4. From the Modify Text dialog box choose File | Save, then name your TXT file, navigate to a convenient location and press <Save>.
  5. Press <OK>, then name your KEY file, navigate to a convenient location and press <Save>.
  6. Press <Start> to process your files.

After processing has completed, the selected text strings in each processed file now use the new font that you designated.
