Global File Changer - How can I report the number of cells in my design files?

This article walks you through counting the number of cells used in multiple files.

This article uses the built-in Count cells in design files… custom feature of Global File Changer to perform this task.

  1. Load Global File Changer.

  1. Go to Settings | Restore Factory Defaults…, and press <Yes> when prompted.
This is a precaution to ensure there are no other features or settings active that might impact your result.
  2. Next to the Design Files: field, press the <Select...> button.
  3. Either drag and drop your files into the Choose Files to Process dialog box, or navigate to and select your files for processing. Press <OK> when finished.

  1. Go to Custom | Count cells in design files…

  1. Press <Select…>, navigate to the folder where you want to save the report, enter a filename, and click <Save>.
  2. If you’d like to count all cells, keep All Cells checked.
If you’d like to count specific cells, uncheck All Cells. In the Which cells should we process field, enter the names of the cells you would like to count in quotes and separated with a space.
    Example: "1-4 x 2 in Bolt" "5-16 x 2 in Bolt"
  3. At the Report field, use the pull-down to choose the report that best suits your need.
Cells in Each File – Reports cell counts in each DGN.
Grand Totals – Reports only the cell grand totals for all DGNs.
Files and Totals – Reports both cell counts in each DGN as well as cell grand totals for all DGNs.
  4. Press <OK> to return to the main Global File Changer window.
  5. Press <Start> to process your files.
  6. After processing has finished, go to Custom | Count cells in design files…, and press <Display Report> to see your results.

The report will list the specified cell names and the number of instances of each based on the report you chose.
