Global File Changer - How can I update non-compliant design file settings in multiple files?

This article walks you through updating settings in the Design File Settings dialog box in multiple files.

This article uses the built-in Update design file settings… custom feature of Global File Changer to perform this task.

The Update design file settings… feature is designed around the idea that each project has consistent design file settings that should be the same for each file in that project. It compares your list of selected files against a file that is known to have the correct design file settings and then applies the correct settings to the processed files.

  1. Load Global File Changer.

  1. Go to Settings | Restore Factory Defaults…, and press <Yes> when prompted.
This is a precaution to ensure there are no other features or settings active that might impact your result.
  2. Next to the Design Files: field, press the <Select...> button.
  3. Either drag and drop your files into the Choose Files to Process dialog box, or navigate to and select your files for processing. Press <OK> when finished.

  1. Go to Manage design file settings | Update design file settings…

  1. Press the <Browse…> button at the top-right, then navigate to and select the DGN file with the correct design file settings.
  2. By default, all settings are checked.
    a. If you’d like to update all design file settings, proceed to the next numbered step.
    b. To update most, but not all design file settings, individually select categories on the left and uncheck the settings you aren’t interested in updating.
    c. To update only a few design file settings, press <Clear All Categories>, then choose your categories of interest and check the settings you would like to update.
  3. Go to File | Save As…, then navigate to a convenient location to save your DSU (Design Settings Update) and press <Save>.
  4. Press <OK> to return to the main Global File Changer dialog.
  5. Press <Start> to process your files.

After processing has finished, the selected settings in each processed file will match those in the selected standard file.
