SpecChecker - Why does SpecChecker keep prompting with a Qadgn.sys read-only message?

This message occurs when SpecChecker does not have write access to Qadgn.sys or the folder containing it. A typical installation puts the Axiom directory in C:\Program Files\.

Solution

Reinstall your Axiom software

  1. Uninstall your Axiom software with Windows Add or remove programs.
  2. Perform a custom installation of your Axiom software to a directory you have full permission to. Attached are directions for performing a custom installation.

After you’ve installed SpecChecker to a location where you have permission, you will be able to run it without the read-only prompt.

Workaround

Copy the files and run the product manually

  1. Copy the Checker folder from C:\Program Files\Axiom\V10\ to a directory you have permissions to. For this example, we’ll use C:\temp\
  2. Copy the files (not folders) from C:\Program Files\Axiom\V10\ folder  to C:\Temp\Checker\.
  3. Load MicroStation and open the Key-in browser.
  4. In the Key-in browser, enter mdl load C:\temp\checker\checker.ma, and press Enter on your keyboard.

Performing these steps won’t prevent the read-only message coming up when loading SpecChecker from the Axiom ribbon. It just provides a way to load SpecChecker manually that prevents the read-only message.
